Biography

Claudio Gerbaldi, graduated in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Technology, is Full Professor of principles of chemistry for applied technologies and Chair of Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at the Politecnico di Torino. He is the leader of the Group for Applied Materials and Electrochemistry (GAME-Lab, https://it-it.facebook.com/GAMELabPoliTO/, https://twitter.com/gamelabg) at the Department of Applied Science and Technology – DISAT. The specific mission of GAME Lab is the development and thorough characterization of innovative electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems (e.g., lithium and post-lithium batteries, third-generation solar cells, supercapacitors and photoelectrocromic devices), which are nowadays fundamental to exploit the full potential of future technologies requiring high performance, such as smart electronics, storage from renewables and electric transportation, with strong collaboration with academy/research centers worldwide and effective connections with industry and EU (6 funded EU H2020 projects and >10 research contracts with industries). He is author/co-author of about 154 scientific research articles published in international ISI journals with >1100 annual citation counts in recent years (>6600 total citations) and h-index 54 (source SCOPUS, 03/2021), 6 International granted patents, 7 research book chapters, and participated in > 70 national/international conferences (>80 oral talks and/or poster presentations), 15 as distinguished invited/keynote/plenary speaker. Among others, he has received the International “Roberto Piontelli” Award – International award delivered in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, for outstanding scientific or technological contributions in the field of electrochemistry for energy-related applications, corrosion or physical chemistry (2015) and the ‘‘UniCredit Award’’ for the Young Innovation in Research (2007).

Research topics

  • Coordinator/leader of the Research Group for Applied Materials and Electrochemistry (GAME Lab, https://it-it.facebook.com/GAMELabPoliTO/; https://twitter.com/gamelabg) at the DISAT Department of the Politecnico di Torino. The specific mission of the GAME Lab is to comprehensively develop and characterize innovative electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems, which are proving to be crucial nowadays to fully exploit the potential of future technologies requiring high performance, such as smart electronics, storage from renewable sources and electric transportation. The GAME Lab's interests and expertise include the development of environmentally friendly materials (nanostructured electrodes and safe polymer electrolytes with high conductivity), their physicochemical and electrochemical characterization, and the study of innovative systems for high-performance, lightweight, low-cost devices such as rechargeable lithium/sodium-ion batteries, lithium/sulfur cells, next-generation photovoltaic devices (dye-sensitized solar cells - DSSC and perovskite cells) and photoelectrochromic devices, in close collaboration with national/international universities and research centers and with effective links with industry and the EU. The research facilities of the GAME Lab are available and viewable at the following link: http://www.disat.polito.it/the_department/internal_structures/department_labs/laboratori_area_chimica_per_l_ingegneria/game_laboratory).
  • Preparation, development and characterization of nanostructured electrode materials for energy storage, production and conversion systems
