Biography

From December 2019: Full Professor in Materials Science and Technology at the Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT) of the Politecnico di Torino. January 2005: PhD in Materials Science and Technology, Politecnico di Torino. June 2000: Habilitation as a Chemist, Università di Torino December 1999: Degree in Industrial Chemistry, Università di Torino. Scientific activity: applied research in the field of materials, especially ceramics and their composites, for the engineering (structural, high temperature, biomedical, functional and environmental applications) and construction materials fields. The research involves unconventional syntheses of simple and composite powders, and focuses on the development and characterization of dense and porous components, on the design and additive manufacturing by stereolithography of engineering ceramics. Research in the field of building materials focuses on sustainable binders, on new materials produced from industrial by-products, on the capture and storage of CO2 by materials for architecture, on the development of new geopolymeric and alkaline-activated materials.

Scientific branch

ING-IND/22 - MATERIALS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
(Area 0009 - Industrial and information engineering)

Research topics

  • 3D printing of ceramic, polymer and composite materials, by stereolithography and robocasting (or direct ink writing)
  • Development of ceramics for biomedical applications: i) inert structural ceramics, based on alumina, zirconia and their composites; ii) bioactive / bioresorbable ceramics, based on calcium phosphates; iii) polymer-ceramic composites.
  • Development of new binding materials, with low environmental impact, and deriving from industrial by-products, for applications in the sector of building materials and civil engineering (roads sector).
  • Development of new geopolymers and alkaline-activated materials, for applications in the construction sector, urban furniture design, flooring.
  • Development of new materials for CARBON CAPTURE and immobilization (capture and storage of CO2), mainly through mineralization processes. Development as new binders and products for the construction industry.
  • Development of porous ceramics for biomedical (scaffold) and environmental (filtration and catalysis systems) applications
  • Development of transparent polycrystalline ceramics (alumina, yttrium and aluminum garnet, YAG) for optical (solid state laser) and structural applications
