Seminario: "Convective mixing in porous media: from CO2 sequestration to thermal energy storage"

Sala Didattica - DISAT - H. 10.30

Understanding convective mixing in porous media is essential for controlling and designing key environmental and industrial processes, ranging from contaminant transport in the subsurface to latent-heat thermal energy storage systems. Long-term geological storage of carbon dioxide is one important example. When carbon dioxide is injected underground for permanent storage, it dissolves into saline groundwater and mixes through convection driven by small density differences. This process enhances the secure trapping of carbon dioxide. However, predicting the rate of mixing remains challenging because it depends strongly on how the fluids and their interactions are modeled. We combine laboratory experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis to investigate how different modeling assumptions influence mixing behavior. Our results show that commonly used simplifications can lead to substantially different predictions. These findings improve our understanding of convective mixing in porous media and provide guidance for the design, operation, and monitoring of such systems.
