Metallic Materials

Specific mission

Research activities in the field of metals are targeted to:
study, design and development, up to the pre-industrial level, of new metal alloys and components for engineering applications, mainly in mechanics/thermo-mechanics, decorative and bio-medical sectors;
study of theoretical and practical aspects related to traditional and advanced metal alloys, their molding processes, thermal treatments and surface modifications;
development of metal alloys and composites by means of powder metallurgy, through thermal and discharge sintering, laser and electron beam melting; analysis of components in-service conditions or under accelerated ageing, with the goal of understanding the reasons of failure and identifying the possible areas of improvement.

Main research Topics

  • Alloys for severe thermal and/or mechanical applications (in close co-operation with section 2, Materials for High Temperature);
  • Light alloys;
  • Precious metals;
  • Metals for aeronautical applications (in close co-operation with section 5, Additive Manufacturing)
